A View of the Peak

A View of the Peak

An overview of the history and development of Hong Kong’s Peak from the 1840s till the 1970s. In this lecture Jason Wordie will detail the evolution of Hong Kong’s most exclusive residential area from earliest times down towards the present. You will learn how Hong Kong’s own hill-station – a local answer to India’s Simla – developed along similar lines to other higher-altitude localities in South East Asia, India and China. Infrastructure development – including engineering feats such as the Peak Tramway – will all be discussed, and the Peak will be firmly anchored in the context of other architectural, botanical and social developments within the wider Hong Kong society during this period.

Extensively illustrated with old photographs, postcards, maps and more, and enlivened as always with numerous anecdotes, this promises to be a fascinating lecture.
